In front of you you can admire the ruins of the Cimbergo castle. The archaeological excavations conducted in the years 2008/2009 trace the first phase of construction of the work to the end of the 11th-12th century. In the nineteenth century there was a stripping of the fortress with the removal of a good amount of the building material to be used for the houses and particularly for the manufacture of the bell tower next to the parish church of SS. Maria Assunta. Of the historic castle there are the remains that can be seen today. The fortress gives a good idea of the place suitable for the construction of a castle: well defended on three sides and conquerable by only one. Ours could only be attacked from the south-west facing side, exactly the same as seen from the Sottocastello plain. In addition, the fortress occupies a strategic position with a view that sweeps up to Lake Iseo and controls the Valcamonica road beyond the village of Cedegolo. The castle has always given me an idea of solitude: different from all other buildings, strong, massive, silent, dominant and … melancholy, sad, alone. Probably my thinking is influenced by the vision I have of the Middle Ages as a cold, sad, dark period. Certainly I’m wrong, but you know the preconceptions are hard to leave. I like to go beyond its walls, sit just outside the entrance arch and take a little time observing the surrounding environment, listening to that silence that helps meditation and brings tranquility. Take some time and go to the castle. Who knows if you too will experience the same sensations as me.
For detailed historical information regarding the castle of Cimbergo, I refer to the personal search on the internet.

When you arrive at the plain where the first houses of the town begin, called Sottocastello, look up to the left.
